Licenses and Journeymen
There are two types of licenses needed for any job:
1) The “MM” (master mechanical) license. This is the license that the owner of any plumbing company needs to have. There are five kinds:
MM1 - plumbing
MM2 – natural gas fitting
MM3 – heat, vent and air conditioning
MM4 – heat, cooling, and process pipe
MM98 – a combination of all four, this is the granddaddy of licenses
2) Journeyman’s license, gas or plumbing. This license is needed by the serviceman who comes to your house to do even the simplest task. A journeyman can supervise apprentices under him, but there MUST be a journeyman on site if there are apprentices working.
So Mr. Bossman who owns a plumbing company MUST have an MM license. But Plumber Steve who shows up at your door doesn’t have to have his MM license because he is working under the umbrella of his boss’s MM license. But Plumber Steve DOES need to have his journeyman’s license. The apprentices working on the job don’t have to have their journeyman’s license because they are being supervised by Plumber Steve.
If someone working on your house does not have the proper licenses they CANNOT pull any permits you may need. Not only is this extremely illegal, but this is going to bite you in the butt in the long run! You as the homeowner will be held liable for any unlicensed and unpermitted work done. And when you are ready to resale your home this will cause very expensive complications and headaches.
So BOTH licenses are required. An MM for the main company, and a journeyman’s license for whoever shows up at the jobsite to do the work.
Yes...Gator Plumbing and Heating has the MM98 license and Jeff Wilson has his gas and plumbing journeyman's license. Brittany Wilson is a journeyman's apprentice.
